Bryan started fencing in New Jersey at age 12. He fenced foil and epee at Montclair Kimberley Academy high school, on two state champion foil teams. Fencing varsity NCAA at Johns Hopkins University, he lead the foil team as MACFA conference champion three years running, helping to win two foil team championships and two three-weapon championships, fenced at the Div. I NCAA Finals in 2002, and was twice selected as team captain. He has been coaching for many years, first at his high school club of Salle d’Armes Montclair, then at the Tri-Weapon Club in Baltimore, and ran his own summer fencing club in NJ, Salle Durandal, for two years. While he enjoys coaching fencing, his primary career is in the field of biology, where he earned his PhD in cellular and molecular biology from UC San Diego. He is currently doing research in a lab studying cyanobacteria.
